Recently italian nataional TV channel Rai tv changed its streaming website, adopting the SilverLight technology.

In particular when I pointed with Firefox to the live tv section, I was requested to install the Moonlight (SilverLight for Linux) plugin. Even if it worked correctly it seemed too slow in full screen mode. I decided then to take advantage of streaming by using VLC, a multimedia player for Linux. Thanks to this link I found the direct URL to play some channels directly; here’s the list:

A last tip : you need to “disguise” VLC as web browser. You need to set a particular property; go on “Tools” => “Preferences” then look below and set “Show settings” on “All”. Then choose on the left panel “Input/Decoders” => “Access modules” => “HTTP(S)”. You must set “User Agent HTTP”, to:

Next time I have to clone my disk probably I’ll use Clonezilla, a Debian based live utility to clone disk.
You can use it by booting a live CD or USB version. To make multiple images, It works in server mode too.
Main features:

• filesystem supported: ext2, ext3, reiserfs, xfs, jfs of GNU/Linux, FAT, NTFS of MS Windows, and HFS+ of Mac OS (testing feature provided by partclone). Therefore you can clone GNU/Linux, MS windows and Intel-based Mac OS. For these file systems, only used blocks in partition are saved and restored. For unsupported file system, sector-to-sector copy is done by dd in Clonezilla.
• LVM2 (LVM version 1 is not) under GNU/Linux is supported.
• Multicast is supported in Clonezilla SE, which is suitable for massively clone. You can also remotely use it to save or restore a bunch of computers if PXE and Wake-on-LAN are supported in your clients.
• Based on Partimage, ntfsclone, partclone, and dd to clone partition. However, clonezilla, containing some other programs, can save and restore not only partitions, but also a whole disk.
• By using another free software drbl-winroll, which is also developed by us, the hostname, group, and SID of cloned MS windows machine can be automatically changed.

Another interesting feature is the backup the MBR; the software let you decide to restore it or just partition. This is an italian description :

La cosa interessante è che effettua il backup sia delle partizioni Fat32 e NTFS che di quelle tipiche di Linux (Ext2, Ext3, ReiserFS). Altra cosa interessante: effettua automaticamente anche il backup del MBR del disco e, al momento di ripristinare, chiede se si vuole ripristinare soltanto la partizione oppure anche il MBR. L’ho provato una sola volta, in un momento di “follia da sperimentatore” (ero comunque prossimo alla formattazione del disco per una successiva reinstallazione di Ubuntu ) ed ha funzionato: ha ripristinato correttamente una partizione (semivuota) e il MBR.”

During last months I had experience in C teaching. Many students told me that C is not important : in their opinion it is obsolete, useless, less attractive than other object oriented languages (someone included VisualBasic 6 also ). Well this morning my Linux Box alerted me with new updates included security option for “sudo” command. Now I ask : is it the C language really useless?

I’m very happy with my CMax. She’s almost two years old, but it feels like new, both in performance and in aspect.

This winter is very rainy round where I live, so I need often to use windshield wiper. It happens then that when I’m parking, at the moment that I use the reverse gear the posterior wiper take up office automatically!!!

Dopo lunga assenza riprendo a scrivere sul blog, con la speranza di poterlo aggiornare un po’ più spesso.

Scrivo questo post in italiano visto che l’argomento di cui tratto non credo abbia molto interesse al di fuori dei confini nazionali. L’altro giorno ho acquistato presso la “grande distribuzione” un decoder DVBT aggiuntivo per casa.

Con molto scetticismo mi sono buttato sul modello Shinelco DTD113. La mia scarsa fiducia nel prodotto derivava da alcune notizie poco rassicuranti lette su alcuni forum : in particolare veniva dato come grande difetto del prodotto in questione la mancata scansione di alcune frequenze fondamentali per la ricezione del multiplex RAI in alcune regioni d’Italia. Veniva anche detto che diversi problemi erano stati superati facendo un semplice aggiornamento del firmware. Il modello di cui parlo non compare peraltro tra i prodotti segnalati sul sito della casa madre.

Particolare interessante di questo decoder è la presenza di una porta USB che consente, udite udite, di registrare direttamente su un supporto USB esterno, sia esso “chiavetta” oppure disco esterno (l’ho personalmente provato con un disco senza alimentazione esterna, di quelli che si alimentano direttamente mediante porta USB). Ma non solo : l’ingresso USB consente anche di leggere eventuali file multimediali presenti nel isco esterno (ad es. DivX).

Tornato a casa ho installato “lo scatolo” mediante la procedura plug’n play (che in molti casi diventa un plug’n pray ) e ha rilevato tutti i canali che rilevava il vecchio decoder. Ho provato la registrazione e questa va benissimo. La riproduzione pure.

Tra le altre caratteristiche del decoder :

• ingresso per scheda di memoria SD (a quanto pare in sola lettura non ho ancora testato);
• comodo adattatore SD –> USB (fornito in dotazione);
• cavo SCART fornito in dotazione;
• euqalizzatore audio e regoloazioni video;
• doppia uscita SCART;
• 8 programmazioni disponibili (che lo possono anche svegliare dallo e riportare in stand-by).

La registrazione è in formato MPEG2 720×576 (anche se una registrazione su SportItalia mi ha dato un video in 544×576) ed ovviamente sono visibili anche da PC. Facendo due rapidi conti in una partizione (gestisce anche quelle!) da 4 GB ci stanno circa 2,5 ore di registrazione.

Il tutto funziona bene forse anche a causa di un preventivo aggiornamento del firmware (la data è di ottobre 2008).

Come ultimo dettaglio, ma non trascurabile, cito il prezzo, secondo me convenientissimo : 40 € !!!
